PROTOCOLS

May I start this address by thanking the most high whose infinite mercies have sustained us to see this day may his name be praise.

It is by God’s special design that this festival holds every year since its inception despite the financial and moral constraint that beset it organizers annually. It show the love the lord himself has for us and we will not go bankrupt by reason of it in Jesus name.

The Arogbo Ibe cultural festival has symbolic similarities with the Passover feast of the Israelites as recorded in Exodus chapter 12. It was celebrated among other reason to mark their deliverance and freedom from oppression, servitude and slavery from the Egyptian. It also serve as a reminder that there is only one supreme being (GOD) who makes the deliverance possible. There are also the driving forces for this celebration.

From the bit and pieces emerging from the celebration it does not look as if we want to make a radical break from them. On the contrary, let us use them to fight our common enemies which have waged war on our land. These enemies are illiteracy, ignorance and disease. They must be confronted headlong. The bullet fired from the barrel of the gun of the enemy kills perhaps just one person at time. But thousands of people have been destroyed by these enemies. We must not relent in our effort to seek knowledge. Our children must also go to school. We must be care about some imported practices which destroy our children (that is a topic for another day).

The need to record achievement to make significant contributions to the development of our society should be the overriding considerations. This festival has assumed a national dimension and should be so seen and treated. It has gone beyond Local coverage therefore let us shift from Local thinks to global thinking. Much of the world already think globally. The largest and most popular festival are all multinational. Our lives are increasingly intertwined with those in other nations as we share fashions, entertainment, music, sports and even fast food. We are more connected than we realize.

We can attract development to this society by reason of this celebration. Let us use our connections and influence to bring friends and associates to donate projects and infrastructure for our overall benefits. Let us commit them to do thing for us as it being done in other Areas like the Argungun fish festival in Kebbi State.

Every Arogbo Ijaw man should feel highly trouble at the site of Arogbo metropolis during the rainy season therefore the need to save the community from further erosion is a joint responsibilities. The Arogbo beach need an embankment and sand filling. There are exciting days to be alive to our responsibilities. There is no substitute for one’s own culture and land.

Let the music play,

Let the celebration continue,

Let sober reflection also take its place in all these.

May God’s mercies and grace be upon our land as we hope for better years ahead.

Thank you all.

Japhet, mother of 2 wins 3 medals for Nigeria

Nigeria began camping for canoeing in June ahead of the 10th All Africa Games. The camp was in Calabar, Cross River State. It was a quiet venture as the sport is relatively new in the country, despite the enormous coast line and numerous communities that either live near water or are locked in riverine areas.

When the Games started in Maputo, Mozambique on September 3, nobody gave the country’s contingent a chance to win anything in the sport. But Nigeria pulled the biggest surprise at the games when her contingent won one silver and two bronze medals at the end of the competition.

One woman made that possible. Little known Lilian Japhet, from Ondo State was the lone winner who bagged the three medals for Nigeria. She was surprised at her achievement.

Soft spoken and somewhat reserved, Lilian was hesitant when this reporter demanded to speak with her. But she eventually succumbed to the reporter’s persistence on speaking with her. Lilian’s story is as interesting as her present status.

“I am from Ondo State,” she began. “I come from Arogbo, in Ese Odo Local Government Area. I am from the Ijaw speaking part of the state.”

From her background, one would easily associate her with water. Although Lilian had known how to swim from childhood, she never had the opportunity to use her expertise scientifically. “I only knew about canoeing in May, this year when my brother, Gbamire Tunde came to me in May and told me that there was a new sport called canoeing, that he would like to introduce me to the sport. From Ikorodu, where I am based he took me to the national stadium and introduced me to the federation. I was lucky to be picked among those for camping. In June we were taken to Calabar for camping. We stayed there till it was time for us to travel for the Games.”

Was she disappointed by her performance? Lilian said, “No. Never. Some people trained for four years for this event and I trained under six months and won a silver and two bronze medals. I am not disappointed at all. I am happy but I believe with better preparations, I could do better.”

She said she had learnt a lot from the games. “I had a great experience. I am happy with my achievement.” Lilian called on the government to help the sport back home because Nigeria has all it takes to sweep all the medals at future games.

Though she looks like an U-18, Lilian said she is 28 and a mother of two.

Before Tunde’s intervention in her life, Lilian’s business was saw-milling. She said she buys logs, transports them on water to saw mills for sawing. She sells woods. “That is what I do,” she said, adding that she will not stop the trade, even after the games.
