In his welcome address, the Chairman Nigerian Legion Irele Local Government chapter, Major Gilbert Olowomuwagun (rtd) thanked government at all level for their support which had being the sources of their joy and sustainability of their life.
He therefore, requested for the pending arrears of their members from the federal government which he said was a great concern to them.
In his speech at the occasion, the Chairman Irele Local Government Hon. Oluwatobi Akinbiola congratulated the retired soldiers still living and those that were still in active service for witnessing another Armed Force remembrance celebration.
The Chairman at the same time sympathized with the families of the fallen heroes who died while serving the nation which he described as a giant step that has sustained the peaceful co-existence among the various ethnic groups of the country.
According to Mr. Akinbiola “My appreciation will not be enough to enumerate what those great heroes did to make us sit here today.
The Families they all left behind and those of us who realized their works will forever miss them and we must not forget that the prevailing peaceful atmosphere we enjoy today is as a result of the painful bloodshed by all these great patriots”.
“There is no doubt that we will continue to appeal to all well-meaning people of Irele Local Government for their generous donations towards the uplift of the widows and disabled of these heroes.”
He said “Despite the Nigeria Labour Congress Strike and the political tension in the country. I want to salute the courage of the good people of Irele Local Government for coming out in large numbers to celebrate and remember our fallen heroes today.”
21 gun salute and parade were part of skills displayed by men of 19th Battalion Barracks Okitipupa.
Speaking, Captain, Lawal Mubarak Yahaya who led the troupe to the occasion said it was high time they celebrated the fallen heroes and their families for the great job they had done to sustain peaceful co-existence of this nation.
He urged their families to have hope in God Almighty and put all their trust in Him as only God was the ultimate comforter.
Special prayers were offered for the fallen heroes’ widows and children as well as Irele Local Government Area, Ondo State and Nigeria as a nation.
The Chairman Irele Local Government Mr. Oluwatobi Akinbiola led the dignitaries at the occasion to lay wreaths at the foot of the status of the Unknown Soldier.
